Gallaudet was inspired by the students and he asked for permission to bring their best student to America to set up a deaf school. Laurent, the second best student, agreed to teach in America for three years before returning home. They sailed together, learning from each other and teaching each other English and sign language.

Upon arriving in New York, they spent a year talking with legislatives to raise money for the school. With the support of the Cogswell family, they were able to build the American School for the Deaf in Hartford. On April 15th, 1817, the first Deaf institute was established, and Clerc became a teacher there. He never returned to France and settled in America. Alice and her father, Alice, were able to overcome their challenges and establish a successful deaf education system.
