  • Patrick Henry was born in Virginia in 1736. His father, John Henry, was well educated and taught him the classics.

  • After failing as a shop keeper and farmer, Patrick studied law and became a successful attorney. He invoked the doctrine of natural rights during the Parson's Cause trial of 1763. This trial solidified his place as an eloquent and talented orator.

  • Patrick Henry went on to be a leader against the British Government. In the Second Virginia Convention, he delivered the famous speech in favor of giving the Virginia militia the resources to fight the British, he famously said, "...give me liberty or give me death!"

  • Patrick Henry went on to be the Commander of the Virginia Forces, the Governor of Virginia, an advisor to George Washington, and a member of the state legislature. He initially opposed the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, but eventually helped develop the Bill of Rights. In 1799 he once again ran for the legislature but died before he could take the seat.
