  • "We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now."
  • Pathos
  • "Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children.
  • Logos
  • "But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination.
  • Martin Luther King uses ethos to point out the location this is taking place, the Lincoln Memorial. Lincoln was also a fighter for equal rights. He set a good role model for this situation because many people at the time greatly admired him and everything he did for the country in the past. An important word in this text is, hallowed. Hallowed means, greatly revered or respected, granting the citizens to fight for freedom.
  • Ethos
  • "When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the "unalienable Rights" of "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note, insofar as her citizens of color are concerned."
  • The use of imagery in this quote, proves to citizens that they could stop the evil that is taking place. Some important words are, desolate valley of segregation. This explains the horror that African Americans go through in a simple way.
  • Pathos
  • "And there will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges."
  • Martin Luther King Jr. repeats the phrase, "One hundred years later." This demonstrates that African Americans have not been equal for 100 years, even after the Emancipation Proclamation. He was trying to emphasize that African Americans have not been treated nicely in a long time and he did that by using statistics.
  • Logos
  • This quote presents the Founding Fathers of the United States of America wanted everyone to be equal. Most Americans praise the Declaration of Independence, so if they praise that document then they should be able to enforce freedom. Therefore, Martin Luther King was trying to prove that the Founding Fathers were citizens who were good role models.
  • In this text, Martin uses words to emphasize how hard they should work and it helps persuade the audience to do the right thing. He uses persuasive language to emphasize the struggles that Black Americans were going through. An example of this language is, "to shake the foundations of our nation..." This is him stating that they will not give up on their fight for equality until it is granted.
  • The use of logos here showed the citizens that in fact, that equality did not take place for the colored population. This is shown through, "America has defaulted on this promissory note, insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. He was saying that America had no intention to create a good society for African Americans.
