- RISING ACTION
- Hazel Grace Lancaster is a 17-year-old girl who is fighting cancer. Despite the fact that an experimental medicine has delayed the progression of her cancer, Hazel is aware that she has a limited lifetime. Because of the cancer in her lungs, she is unable to breathe without the assistance of a portable oxygen tank and tubes.
- CLIMAX
- Hazel befriends Augustus, a cancer survivor, but she doesn't want to get romantically involved with him because she doesn't want to break his heart when she dies.
- FALLING ACTION
- Hazel and Augustus grow closer together through a shared love of the book An Imperial Affliction by Peter Van Houten. They write to Van Houten to find out the details of his unfinished ending, and when he refuses to tell them, they plan a trip to visit him.
- RESOLUTION
- Hazel is different... She walks lightly upon the earth...
- In Amsterdam, Hazel and Augustus are disappointed by Peter Van Houten, but the journey brings them closer together.Hazel agrees to begin a romantic relationship with Augustus only to learn that his cancer has returned and cannot be treated.
- Hazel and Augustus grow closer as the latter's health deteriorates, and they assist each other cope with their physical and mental agony.
- Augustus dies, but Hazel is grateful to have loved him and finds solace in the eulogy he left for her.
