  • Of course!
  • Isn’t this peaceful? The beach, the sound of waves crashing up against the rocks, the sun beaming down on us.
  • Of course! There are ocean waves which transfer energy... are there any other kinds of waves? There must be!
  • There are tons of waves, but they are all different! First, there are two different kinds of waves; mechanical and electromagnetic.Ocean waves and sound waves are a kind of mechanical waves! They come in two main types with different characteristics. Then there are many different kinds of electromagnetic waves, kinds with different characteristics! Light is an example of an electromagnetic wave!!
  • Mechanical waves and electromagnetic waves both transfer energy they differ in how they transfer energy which deals with a medium. Medium - A medium is a substance or material (matter) that can carry a wave.A medium is a matter which means it can be a solid, liquid, or gas. It's important to note that a wave's speed changes when entering certain mediums which is dependent on the medium's properties.
  • Well, if they each have their own unique characteristics... what are they?
  • Waves have certain characteristics which include:
  • There are other features of a wave such as the crest and trough; however, a longitudinal wave will have other characteristics such as a compression and rarefaction.
  • Amplitude - determines the amount of energy/loudness
  • Wavelength - distance from two crests or two troughs
  • Trough - lowest downwards displacement
  • Crest - greatest upwards displacement
  • Compression - area where the particles are closest together.
  • Speed - the distance traveled by a wave in a given amount of time (Speed = wavelength x frequency).
  • Frequency - the amount of waves that pass a given time which determines pitch (Note: the longer the wavelength, the smaller the frequency and vice versa)
  • Rarefaction - area where the particles are farthest apart.
  • While waves don't move matter, they transfer energy. Transverse waves move particles perpendicular to the wave.
  • Mechanical WavesMechanical waves are different from electromagnetic waves as they require a medium to transfer energy. Mechanical waves have two main types; transverse and longitudinal (& surface waves). They each have their own characteristics.
  • As for longitudinal waves, they move particles parallel to the wave.
  • Electromagnetic wavesElectromagnetic waves can transfer energy with or without matter/medium (Vacuum - a space void of matter) which means they are able to travel through space. All electromagnetic waves are transverse waves. An example of an electromagnetic wave includes light. (Transverse waves move particles perpendicular to the wave.)
  • Your referring to the electromagnetic spectrum! It is the range of wavelengths and frequencies among electromagnetic radiation! This ranges from radio waves, microwaves, infrared waves, visible light, ultraviolet waves, x-rays, and gamma rays (longest to short wavelength and lower frequency to highest frequency). We see these waves everyday! For instance radio waves are used in television, microwaves cook our food, infrared waves gives us sunburn, visible light helps us see, ultraviolet waves kill bacteria, x-rays helps us see our bones, and gamma rays are used in medicine,.

  • I've heard of an EM spectrum... what is that?
