  • The British introduced railways to Indian ports in order to make transport of goods, especially cotton, cheaper for British merchants. This allowed the British to make large profits from different Indian goods, including raw cotton.
  • Yes, it's also a lot cheaper!
  • When the British government ended slavery, they lost huge amounts of free labor. To replace it, they took laborer's from India. They were taken most commonly to Fiji, South Africa, or the Caribbean, to work on sugar plantations. This took place between 1838 and 1917. They all signed contracts to work 5 years however since many of the workers were illiterate, they didn't understand what they were signing. Many of them ended up working for much longer than 5 years in terrible conditions

  • Before the British introduced machines, most Indian goods were traditionally made by hand. When the British first started to introduce machines, in the 1850's, most locals preferred machine made goods as they were a lot cheaper. That lead to the industry of hand made goods to decline.
  • How come many goods are now a lot cheaper?
  • It is because they were made in factories, not by hand!
