- The story begins with the narrator receiving a letter from his childhood friend roderick usher, urging the narrator to meet him at the house of usher. When the narrator arrives at the house he notices that the house and it's surroundings are overwhelmingly gloomy and melancholy.
- Once the narrator is in the house, he learns that the house, roderick's mental health and roderick's sister madaline are all in shambles.Roderick is sad that madeleine is sick and confidentnt that she is going to die because the doctors can't figure out what's wrong with her.
- Roderick tells the narrator that him and madeline are twins as they bury her alive without knowing she is still alive.
- Madeline screams as she claws her way out of her grave which causes the narrator and roderick to wake up.
- A massive storm destroys the house with madeline and roderick in it as the narrator flees the house.
