  • Siddhartha left his palace to seek for religious truth and end life’s suffering. He left because of the Four journeys. This is when he left four times and he saw a old men, a sick man, a corpse, and a holy man wandering. After wandering in the forests of a India for 6 years he started to seek for enlightenment, which is the state of perfect wisdom in which one understands basic truth about the universe.

  • Siddhartha tried my different ways to reach enlightenment but none of the things he tried work. Then he tried mediation and after 49 days of mediating under a bodhi tree he achieved enlightenment. From then on he was known as Buddha, meaning the enlightened one.
  • Buddha preached his first sermon with five companions.He had four main ideas called the 4 Noble Truths. First is the truth of suffering, second is the truth of the cause of suffering, third is the truth of the end of suffering and fourth is the truth of the path that leads to the end of suffering ending in enlightenment. To attain you have to follow the Eightfold path, called the Middle way between desires and self-denial

  • Buddha accepted ideas from Hindu beliefs such as re-incarnation. He believed that the world is destroyed and recreated over and over. Buddha did not accept the caste system because it was unequal and unfair.
  • After Buddha’s death, he is buried in sacred mounds called stupas. The teachings and practices were divided into three traditions. The Theravada Way, meaning the way of the Elders based on the oldest known writings called the Pali Cano. In contrast the Mahayana way where people help each other find enlightenment. The Bodhisattuas were the enlightened who helped you get there. Lastly the Tibetan Buddhism.
  • Buddhist missionaries went out and spread the belief over Buddha to other parts of the world but nothing like trade did. Traders brought their Buddhism faith along tenth them while trading their product. They stretched from Sri Lanka to all over Asia, like Thailand, China, Japan, and many more around those arounds.
