  • One day, Tammi was walking in the forest. One thing was on her mind, the upcoming science fair.
  • What will I do for the science fair. Ugh!
  • OBSERVATION. As Tammi passed the lightly flowing river, the small bubbles against the shore sparked her interest.
  • HMMM. There are a lot of bubbles forming on the edge of the river.
  • Wait! This is perfect! I can analyze this river and find a research question to do my science fair project on!
  • She used all of her senses to come to a conclusion. Temperature!
  • Tammi then sat by the edge of the water and brainstormed what factors of the river she could ask a good research question about.
  • I could record the speed of the water?, the particles in the water?... I know! The temperature! I know that the library has a device that can measure temperature and dissolved oxygen in the water. I can use that to get data about the river!
  • ASK A QUESTIONTammi then knew that she had to apply the scientific method to her observation .
  • Does the temperature of the river affect the dissolved oxygen in the river?
  • Temperature?..... Bubbles? I know that the bubbles are caused by oxygen. I wonder if the temperature has any affect on the amount of oxygen in the river!
  • RESERCHTammi began her research on reliable websites. She gathered information about her topic and began to think about her hypothesis and how she would design an experiment to test her hypothesis.
  • To develop this hypothesis, Tammi first found her dependent variable, the temperature of the water and an independent variable, the amount of dissolved oxygen. The she remembered from her research that different depths of water in rivers can have an effect on the temperature of the water. The deeper the water, the colder, and the shallower the water, the warmer. She also observed that in the river, there were more bubbles in the shallower (warmer) places compared to the deeper (colder) places.
  • HYPOTHESISThe colder the water the more dissolved oxygen will be in the water.
