  • "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling, one of the main themes is, "Mankind is its own enemy."An example of this theme is when the residents of Maple Street accuse Les of turning the power off, and having contact with the aliens. (page 76) Everyone turned on him with no evidence, and he had absolutely no support. Adding to that, when Goodman said, "You were so quick to kill, Charlie, and you were so quick to tell us who we had to be careful of," (Goodman). (page 83) What Goodman said wasn't fair, and the neighbors agreeing with him wasn't fair either. If any other person had seen a black figure, because they all were on an adrenaline rush, the first instinct is to shoot when you have a shotgun in your hand. Lastly, In Act 2 when they all started shooting, accusing, and fighting each other. (page 85) If you're trying to find an alien, and you think it's a family with 2 kids, why wouldn't you look for a family with 2 kids? They turned on each other for no reason, and they were all truthfully innocent. "Mankind is its own enemy," is the theme for this story, all the residents of Maple Street turned on each other and became their own enemies.
