- Janie's sexuality awakens for the first time after she watches the pollination process under a blossoming pear tree. Later, she kisses Johnny Taylor.

- Nanny, Janie's grandmother, marries off Janie to Logan Killicks because she wants her to be financially stable. But, Janie never loved Logan. One day Janie meets Joe Starks and spends time with him everyday. She leaves Logan and decides to marry him and leave to Eatonville.

- Over the years, Janie realizes she doesn't love Joe because he oppressed her. One day, while Joe insults Janie, she decides to stand up to him and insult him back. After this, their marriage falls apart and Joe dies shortly after, leaving Janie to be free.

- A couple months later, Janie meets Tea Cake in her store. Shortly after, she marries him and moves with him to the muck to work. She truly loved him. One day, while trying to flee during a hurricane, a dog tries to bite Janie but it ends up biting Tea Cake while helping her.

- Due to the dog bite, Tea Cake ends up infected with rabies. Then, it drives him mad and tries to kill Janie because he thought she was cheating on him. Janie has no other option and decides to shoot him.
- After Tea Cake's funeral, Janie returns to Eatonville at peace with herself and doesn't care what the community gossips about her. She sits down in her porch and tells the story of her life to her best friend, Phoebe.
