In the text, it states, "At the end of the meal my father leaned back and belched loudly "(6). This demonstrates what the girl was afraid of , her relatives not having the proper American manner's and seeming rude.

- This scene is also important to the story as a whole, mainly because whenever her mom tells her that she can be like an American girl but she has to always be Chinese, she also tells her that her only shame is to have shame and the girl learned that it is not bad to be different. This shows when her mom told her that she learned that it is not a bad thing to be different.
