  • Thomas! Thomas! Come outside. I have exciting news and you're going to want to hear about it!
  • 1. Hey Ben! I'm here, I'm here.
  • 2. Come on! My father is back from his travels and he's going to tell me about it. Let's go meet up with him to hear what he has to say. I overheard him telling some things about it to my mom and it sounded cool.
  • 2. Wait, Dad! Did you see any Texas Longhorns?
  • 1. Hello boys, I'm finally back from my trip. I have so many tales to tell...
  • 1. Of course. That's how I earned my keep for a majority of my time. Texas Long Horns were the most popular cattle used in cattle drives, which was the process of moving herds of cattle from one place to another. These cattle were big and very useful. I became a cowboy and I led these cattle west, as did many other cowboys, on the Chisholm Trail, a commonly used route from Texas to the Kansas railroads. This cattle were used as shipments. This also allowed for the advancement of our economy, as this established shipping points for farming regions!
  • 2. Wow! It sounds like there were a lot of cowboys and cattle, that's crazy! It's so cool that my dad was a cowboy.
  • 1. And a pretty good one at that! Yeah, so the market for beef increased, and so has the economy due to that Homestead Act. This is where the government provided 160 acres of land to anybody who would farm it/ live on it and take care of it. This act had a lot of people moving and spreading around to new land at the same time.
  • 2. I heard about that! What about all those Native Americans living out there? Don't they get in the way?
  • 1. Well actually, the Dawes Act gave our government permission to break up tribal lands and even granted citizenship to those that lived on some lands, to those that won't fight back, though. This allowed a lot people to spread out and move into this Western land.
  • 2. Wow, I wouldn't have thought that they would've given up their land, even like that.
  • 3. Not all groups are so willing. For example, the Sitting Bull, a Native American chief, united the Sioux tribes in the Great plains to retaliate against our government and this Dawes Act, which definitely wasn't good. It was wild for sure, a bunch of people died!.
