- Gatsby fell in love with Daisy and Fitzgerald fell in love with Zelda Sayre. Just like Daisy who broke her promise and did not wait for Gatsby when he left for the war, but married Tom Buchanan in 1919, Zelda also could not wait for Fitzgerald to become wealthy so she broke their engagement.
- Although Zelda did not marry someone else, she did wait to accept Fitzgerald’s proposal until after the publication of The Side of Paradise.
