- Amidst the loud commotion in the Kabul market, there lay a dad and daughter selling letters. Parvana (the daughter) is an 11 year old, small child.
- The Taliban militia has completely took over Afghanistan. Women are not allowed to go out without their husband. To Parvana's family; this is crushing.
- Nooria is Parvana's big sister, she bullies her in a loving way. Their Mother worked at a radio station while Father worked as a teacher, but now nobody has jobs.
- Nooria misses school, while Parvana thinks it's a great holiday. Parvana's favorite subject is History; she loved to learn how so many civilizations tried to take over Afghanistan, and failed.
- The family used to have a large house, with servants, a backyard and all. Now it is merely one small room that the whole family lives in. The old house was bombed, and the family has been moving ever since. Bombs fell regularly in Kabul.
- Talib means religious scholar but Parvana's father doesn't see it that way. They are supposed to make a better life for us! After the long work day, the family went back home, and passed a beautiful mountain. it's mount Parvana her father states. The family laughs along as they arrive back home.
