  • The Donner Party split into two groups at Fort Laramie, Wyoming. One group, supported by Arthur Burton, thought it would be an early winter and they would get stuck. The other (4 wagons, 24 oxen, and 4 families), which included George Donner, Jacob Donner, William Eddy, John Snyder, and James Reed, said they would make it if they took a shortcut. The majority said they would head back to Illinois, and the new smaller Donner Party took Hastings Cutoff, a not-so-very shortcut.

  • The front axle of George Donner's family wagon broke, and while making a new one, George cut his hand badly, and precious time was lost.
  • At last, the group reached the foot of the main ridge near Truckee Lake. It was sundown, and with an approaching storm, the pioneers spent the night at the lake. During the night, it began snowing. They tried to make it over the pass in the morning, but the snow was already five feet deep. Everyone was too exhausted to push on. The next day, defeated, they returned to the eastern end of the lake.
  • It was clear that they had to spend the winter at the lake. Shelter must be made, James Reed built his family a small cabin The other families had to liveinside their wagons.
