That is so exciting. I am going to include this in my lesson tomorrow to push their thinking for instruction. Thank you for the feedback.
This is so cool!

We talked about what we would do to find the right sound. One student suggested looking in a Pictionary with words to find the initial sound in cat. Another suggested to go back to their journals to find the word and how it is spelt. Another student said the word cat is in words such as caterpillar and catch and they all start with the letter c.
Wow! You got a lot of information that think about their understanding of letters, sounds and words. I hope that you documented this through an audio recording or anecdotal notes. This is great assessment.

Of course I documented everything, it will provide me with great next steps in small groups. I then shared the word cup with them and we used Elkonin boxes to revise the learning goals and I spelt it with a K on purpose to see what they would say. They redirected me to the steps we came up with and we then.
Well you can teach them explicitly that, the c letter starts a word if the vowel that follows is an a, o or u and the letter k is the initial letter we use when the vowel that follows is an I or an e.
