  • The year 1860. This is the year I, Sam, set off to Nevada for work, it's been heard these past few years. Much of our crop isn't doing any good. My mother's brother, Henry, arrived just days ago telling us of a mining spot just west of hear. He had struck it very well! Henry had been able to stake his claim after an accident and named the spot Comstock Lode in 1859. As the oldest, my father sent me to go back to Nevada with my uncle Henry to work and help the family in our debt and needs.
  • I've already hired a set of hands for my crew, but I'd be very happy to have you there, Sam! Though the work will be harder, you'll have to mine by hand and for long hours.....
  • Uncle said we will go by wagon for a bit of the journey and then we'll go on a train he said. it was innovated on February 28, 1827. I've never been on a train...
  • The year is 1860. We arrived in Virginia City, Nevada. There's probably hundreds of people living here! Uncle Henry explained that what started this was the Gold Rush, which began in 1848. He said people mistake this town as a mining spot for gold. He explained that he and his crew and other miners mined for iron- pure iron ore. We had to stake claims to our mining spots to make sure no one took them.
  • This is a boom-town. If you'd came here it would have looked like a empty cavern!
  • Wow. There's so many buildings. There's alot of different people, too...
  • The year is 1860. Uncle Henry checks me into an apartment. He says he's right upstairs to me but he'll move both of us into his house when it's built and ready to live in. This apartment has three two rooms and its very own room for showering and a toilet! I ask how much it cost but Uncle said it's all payed and done for. It's too much and all I can do to stay rooted is thinking of my first letter i'll send when I get paid so I can send my family money.
  • Uncle Henry says he's made over $4 million in a year alone! i'm sure father will almost fall from his incredility.
  • Prices these days can range from $200 for a cot and $1000 for an apartment like this one!
  • The year is 1870. My family has paid all their debt off most of their debt. Though they still have much to owe. I've been mining for ten years now and uncle Henry and I have moved into his enourmous etsate. Every year I take a train to my home to spend a month with my family and head right back to this place. Virginia, Nevada- in 1864, just four years since i arrived here, was admitted as the 36th state. I even made a frieend named Jack. Though he keeps
  • I've heard that now since Nevada was admitted as a state more people are flocking here.
  • I hope Uncle doesn't decide to hire more hands for our crew. Then our cut will be split unevenly.
  • It's the year 1872. I've sent a private train cart for my family. The railroad has expanded over 170,000 miles! Now my family will be able to come visit me and see all the work that has be done here. Uncle Henry was kind enough, though I'd have rather not let him, to send many new servants and workers to help keep the cart safe and deliver everything I've sent.
  • Excuse me sir, how long will it take to get to our destination?
  • Not long. I believe in about a week tops.
  • The year is 1877. Uncle Henry has retired from the mining business. He had been growing tired and now that the iron ore prices and overall load has gone down. We reached past the peak now, though Uncle Henry is still one of the wealthiest men around. I've writing this letter in hopes that you might visit me little brother. I wish to meet your wife and little girls. I hope this letter finds you well and that when you ever visit, I'll be waiting.
  • Sam we need to get going.
  • Let me finish my letter. We don't have much work anymore anyways.
