- Here we are witnessing the start of what is a population of butterflies. Here at the starting point of a population there is genetic variation and in this case we can see the variation with the phenotypes of the butterflies; purple and orange. Purple butterflies are a lot more in danger in this specific habitat since their color highlights more for predators.
- The butterflies are starting to reproduce and our population is starting to grow and flourish. To give you more information on these butterflies, they are both fed by the resources of the garden; flowers, and other plants in the ground. Without these, neither would we be able to survive.
- Right at the highest point in our butterfly population, our main predator comes in. Because of their color, the hawk is able to differentiate between the purple butterflies a lot more and focus on them; they are the prey. Natural Selection has definitely not favored purple butterflies, and the hawk is having a feast.
- Natural selection and survival of the strongest have wiped out the majority of the purple butterflies. They are doing everything they can to survive!
- There is no genetic variation in sight. The last of the purple butterflies have all either evolved or died. They unfortunatly had natural selection against and lost the "survival of the feattest". The only ones left are the orange butterflies that were favored in every aspect and are no longer in danger of the hawk.
- Over time, our beloved orange butterflies have never been better! Nobody bothering them. They have characteristics that have evolved and they have fully developed adaptations. Their descendant offspring will inherit all of these traits and give room for even more butterflies when the old ones die out.
