- Piper Chapman
- Character TraitsPiper has led a privleged life in comparison to her fellow inmates. She is smart and educated, yet still managed to commit a crime worthy of a prison sentence. She is resourceful and caring yet selfish and ambitious. We see her embrace prison and the crime and corruption within it. Crime Piper is convicted of aiding the trafficking of illegal drug money. When she attended college she met Alex Vause, whom worked for crime lord Kubra at the time. As her relationship with Alex evolved so did her involvement in smuggling. However, her criminal days were few and she returned home, leaving Alex and the Crime behind. Character ArcPiper begins her sentence, still married to her Fiance Larry. She is naive and intimated when she first enters the prison, learning to find her feet in the throng of incarcerated women. However, as her journey continues, Piper forms relationships and friendships with women that help her to adjust to her new life and make her a stronger person.

- Character TraitsAlex Vause has had an eventful life, only continuing when she arrives in the prison. She is smart, cool and calculated. She knows how to handle herself, yet when it comes to her tumultuos relationship with Piper we see her fluster. She goes through her fair share of hard times, but her intelligence and good heart keep her going. Crime Alex was a successful and high up member of Kubra's drug and money smuggling crime ring. She travelled the world, selling, smuggling and partying. Enlisting Piper due their relationship was also the cause of Piper's downfall. As Alex was the one who named Piper to reduce the sentence of her own case. Character ArcAlex arrives and immediately her relationship with piper worsens. As she attempts to keep her head down, Kubra orders her assassination at the hands of one of his men posed as a guard. Alex murders him in self-defence, spiralling into a guilt-ridden and paranoid mess. However, as her and Piper's relationship continues we see her love and fiercely protect those she cares about.
- Character TraitsRed has been here far longer than the majority of other inmates. She is a huge personality and a force to be reckoned with. Red is strong, cunning and resourceful, a tough mother-hen to her prison family. She acts as a parent to numerous lost souls in the prison, such as Nicky. Her ability to make the most of her time in prison is reliant on her sheer will and sometimes, intimidation. CrimeRed lands herself in prison due to her involvement with the Russian mafia. In order to keep her restaurant and family safe she hid bodies and weapons in her restraunt. She began lending her thoughts and ideas to The Russian mafia bosses, another reason why she dominated in the prison. With criminal ties still in her grasp Red used her kitchen job to smuggle contraband in. Character ArcIn the beginning we see Red as a tough, controlling figure, the other inmates either fearing her or loathing her. However, as the harshness of life and the depravities of prison infiltrate everyday life, Red guides and protects her prison family.

- Character TraitsTastyee is a fun, loving character with a good heart and a passion for making the world a better place. Taystee's big heart is her best attribute and sometimes her worst. Her friends and family are the most important to her and her survival in a world of poverty depends on it. CrimeTaystee belonged to an organised drug ring, led by Vee. Herself and many other children were manipulated by their 'Street Mom' into selling drugs for her benefit. As a means for survival and due to her intelligence, Taystee thrives in her position landing her a prison sentence. Character ArcAlthough, throughout her time in prison Taystee is a lovable comic, her relationship with Vee turns her into a hardened and cold person. Turned against her family Taystee soon learns who the real enemy is and tries fiercely to fix her relationships. In the end Taystee is a key fighter for justice for herself and other women who are victims of the system.

- Nicky Nicholl's
- Character TraitsNicky is one of the most complex characters on the show. She is a loving, humorous and misunderstood girl battling the woes and heartbreak of addiction. She loves deeply and finds comfort in her prison family, especially her guardian and 'mom' Red. CrimeNicky is accused of breaking and entering whilst also in possession of Heroin. Her relationship with her mother and lack thereof appears to be Nicky's main reason in using drugs as an escape. She acts out commits these crimes due to not only her absent mother but also due to her harrowing addiction. Character ArcNicky's development is not straightforward, due to the prison having access to drugs Nicky has many temptations in her sobriety. The affect her love/hate relationship has on her family is heart breaking. Yet Nicky proceeds to be a brave, strong woman and makes it out the other side.
- Suzanne 'Crazy Eyes'
- Character TraitsSuzanne is a widely misunderstood character, with her condition other prisoners find her unsettling and unpredictable. She wants to be loved and cared for, in an environment which makes that difficult. Her condition does not, however, hold her back from making her family. Crime Suzanne's crime is one of the more harrowing of crimes, She unknowingly kidnaps a young boy believing him to be her friend. Under her watch the young boy subsequently falls from a balcony and Suzanne is found responsible. Character ArcSuzanne is lost and obsesses over people and things to provide comfort in an otherwise hostile environment. She clings to each person as she painstakingly tries to form attachments with people, one being Piper, in order to get herself through her time. The peoples she surrounds herself with help guide her and keep her on the right path, such as Taystee.
