  • 'Who are you? And where from? What brings you here by seaways—a fair traffic?'
  • Poseidon had allowed our ship to break apart on your island's rocky end.
  • As courtesy to your guest, we will receive any gifts you give us. Zeus will avenge any unoffending guest.
  • 'You are a ninny,or else you come from the other end of nowhere, telling me, mind the gods!'
  • Where did you leave you ship, now?
  • ‘Sweet cousin ram, why lag behind the rest in the night cave? You never linger so, but graze before them all, and go afar to crop sweet grass, and take your stately way leading along the streams, until at evening you run to be the first one in the fold. Why, now, so far behind?'
  • The men find a cave and burn their offerings to the gods, but a cyclops appears. After he does his chores of milking his ews, he finds the men in his cave. He closed the door behind, which was a boulder way too heavy for Odysseaus' men to lift.
  • The Cyclops disrespects Zeus and rejects their request for gifts. But when the Cyclops asks where his ship is, Odysseus said it was destroyed.
  • Freedom!
  • With that, the Cyclops takes two of the men and devours them. After his meal, he flops down beside his sheep.
  • Odysseus had tied three rams together for each man. He hid the men under their bellies so that they could leave the cave, unfelt by the Cyclops' hands. When it was his turn to go, he chose the fluffiest of the sheep to hide under. The Cyclops questioned why the lead ram was at the end, but let the ram through.
  • Once they had left the cave, Odysseus untied them and they took the sheep and fled for their boat.
