- After Andy followed Melinda to the woods, Andy excitingly says, "Do you want to " He asked. What did he say? I didn't answer. I didn't know. I didn't speak" (Anderson 134).

- As Melinda works on her tree drawing, Andy walks in. Melinda try's to ignore it. Melinda constantly explains, "IT sits on my table, ITs leg smears by chalk drawing, blurring the roots into a mossy fog. IT: 'Hello anyone home? Are you deaf?" (Anderson 161).

- During class Melinda heads into the bathroom. Melinda quickly explains, "I hold the cap in my teeth. I start another subject thread on the wall: Guys to stay away from. The first entry is the beast himself : Andy Evans" (Anderson 175).

- As Melinda and Rachel have a conversation in the library, Melinda finally tells Rachel what happened. Rachell furiously yelled "Liar!' She stumbles out of her chair and grabs her book of the table. "I can't believe you. You're Jealous that I'm popular and I'm going to prom and so you lie to me to me like this. And you sent me that note, didn't you? You are so sick" (Anderson 184).
- Melinda turns the light off to the school closet and walks out. Melinda frighteningly explains, "Somebody slams into my chest and knocks me back into the closet. The light flicks on and the door closes. I am trapped with Andy Evans" (Anderson 193).
- As time is up for the art project, Melinda hands it in. Mr. Freeman gently says, "You get an A+. You work hard on this' He hands me the box of tissues. 'You've been through a lot, haven't you?' (Anderson 198).
