Feudalism. What is it?

- Hello, today we will be discussing the Middle Ages, also referred to as Medieval Times. This period lasted from A.D. 476-1500.
- Specifically we will be discussing the rise of a social system called Feudalism (and you may be asking, what exactly is Feudalism?
- First and foremost, it should be mentioned that Feudalism is a social system, not a system of government (remember to keep that in mind as you can continue to read) To answer the question at hand, Feudalism was a system where the poorer people would perform acts of labor for wealthy landowners in exchange for protection and living space on the land upon which they worked. This system lasted for hundreds of years, and most definitely had a toll on the evolution of Western Europe. *social standing in feudalism was still hereditary
- For one, people would rarely travel outside the manors (the large estates in which they worked) so there was a significant decrease as far as the rate of trade goes. This was due to people bartering within the manors (exchange of goods), rather than venturing outside, having a deleterious impact on cultural diffusion. Ideas were shared less and less.
- The manors were self sufficient (all the peoples' needs were satisfied at the manors) There were millers that ground wheat into flour, clergies hosted church ceremonies, craftsmen, tailors, as well as people in other professions. Towns were obsoleted and diminished in importance because money was no longer that necessary.
- In addition, it's imperative that one understands why Feudalism developed only after the fall of the Western Roman Empire.
