- the middle drawer was where the pistol was hidden. Will had never used or seen one and was shocked to see Shawn had one. He was curious to what he used it for.

- The very beginning of this novel had a huge impact on the story. Without this, I feel like there would be no story line. It starts off with William, the protagonist and narrator, at a scene where his brother Shawn was just shot. It's so hard to say, Shawn's dead. Shawn's dead. Shawn's dead. So strange to say. So sad (Reynolds, 8).

- Shawn’s pistol represents the cycle of violence prevalent in his and Will’s community. It also shows the ways that cycle of violence corrupts young men and deprives them of their innocence. The quote above symbolizes this because it is emphasizing the importance of the gun, and how the author represented the violence of it.
- The next major event in Long Way Down is when Will explains more details about Shawn. He talks about Shawn's side of the room, and the middle drawer. A BROKEN HEART killed my dad. That’s what my mother always said. And as a kid I always figured his heart was forreal broken like an arm or a toy or the middle drawer. Furthermore, In the beginning of this book, Will explained how the middle drawer of Shawn’s dresser was the only thing in their room that was messy. The middle drawer was broken and was never clean. The middle drawer of Shawn's dresser represented the darkness and danger in himself.
- Moving on, the next thing brought up was the L button . In Will’s building the elevator represents his sense of feeling trapped. He feels “trapped by the rules” of the violence in his neighborhood. He also feels trapped in his grief over his brother Shawn’s death. I JOINED IN, fanning the smoke, shaking her comment about the gun, looking at Buck all crazy. But he ain’t care. Just leaned back and took another pull on the cig, burning but not burning down. Still long. Fire. Smoke. But no ash.
- When the smoke begins it represents Will’s emotion. I think the smoke in the elevator represents Will’s emotion. The more confused Will became, the thicker the smoke got. He wasn't seeing clearly . In this quote Will says that there is smoke but no ash. I think this is because the smoke is not real. I JOINED IN, fanning the smoke, shaking her comment about the gun, looking at Buck all crazy. But he ain’t care. Just leaned back and took another pull on the cig, burning but not burning down. Still long. Fire. Smoke. But no ash.
- The last major event in Long Way Down is the elevators. A lot happens here, for instance, Will see's all of his former friends and family that have passed away due to trying to get revenge. In Will’s building the elevator represents his sense of feeling trapped. He feels “trapped by the rules” of the violence in his neighborhood. He also feels trapped in his grief over his brother Shawn’s death. So I explained them to her so she wouldn’t think less of me for following them [...] So that she knew I had purpose and that this was about family and had I known The Rules when we were kids I would’ve done the same thing for her.
