- The Rise of Segregation

- We just have to fight for this land. This land isn't for them to take. It is nature's land.
- I just want to be free, like we once used to be.
- After the Compromise of 1877, reconstruction failed and segregation and racism rose. Unfortunately, the government found a way to disenfranchise African Americans without breaking the law.
- The Rise of Industry
- No, not you, the boy.
- During this time, mining started to grow. Therefore, many settlers (homesteaders) went west and lived in boomtowns and started to farm and work in mines.
- The Railroads
- We deserve more money!
- While the settlers were moving west, we were running into the Native Americans and their land. The whites tried to make peace, but they never abided by the treaties and promises. The whites believed that through the Dawes Act, we could encourage Native American assimilation into American society.
- During the Industrial Revolution, new advances in technology were made. New resources were discovered, like the standard oil industry. Along came the time we know as the Gilded Age. During this time many new things were created, but they came at a cost like child labor, racial tensions, civil service reform, and prohibitions. Even though there were some issues, this time era led to new advances in technology including railroads.
- Okay
- Me? But I'm only 8.
- we have new technologies, so we need more people to work in the factories
- This was a time of great success but at the cost of people trying to survive off their paycheck. The railroads were being built, so more jobs were available but these people weren't getting paid very well at all. As a result, many started unions to try and get a paycheck raise. The railroad growth also leads to the Credit Mobilier Scandal.
