- In the beginning of chapter one it is made clear that Desiree does not like to be associated with the town of Mallard. Readers find out how much she dislikes Mallard when Bennett writes, "How Desiree never wanted to be a part of the town that was her birthright" (Bennett 7). This quote shows how even though her bloodline has very rich history with Mallard she does not want to stay and be associated with it.
- In the middle of chapter 1 the twins ran away from Mallard. When they ran away the weather was described as, "The sky was clear when the twins left home without looking back" (Bennett 17). This shows how Desiree and Stella left during the perfect time because the next night the river flooded and they would have most likely turned around.
