  • Because it was very cold in England and they had very rocky soil, they built lots of factories in the region instead of farms. Inventors soon found a way to develop the region's abundant water power.
  • During this time, Francis Cabot Lowell improved the power loom for the rapid weaving of cotton cloth and harnessed the water power of nearby rivers to run his factories. Many people were willing to work in the factories, but some continued to work on the farms when they were needed, especially during the harvest.
  • Since the Founding Fathers provided a system of rewarding an individual for his ingenuity through patents, many people in the United States worked hard on new inventions, knowing that they would profit from the free enterprise system.
  • Elias Howe invented a much-improved sewing machine that could be applied to both cloth and leather goods. After 1854, Elias Howe was making over $4,000 a week in royalties (money earned) from his invention (over $130,000 today). Isaac Singer made further improvements on the sewing machine, and Singer became a household name to millions.
