While Desiree was describing her sister, she stated that, “Stella groaned, rolling over, the sheets knotted around her ankles. She’d always been a wild sleeper, prone to nightmares she never talked about.”(Bennett 15). Due to Stella nightmares, she would sleep crazy or would hardly sleep. She was afraid that what happened to her father might happen to her which is the reason for the nightmares.

When hearing that an African American family is moving next door to her, Stella's response was, "You must stop them, Percy, she said. If you don't, there'll be more and then what? Enough is enough!"(Bennett 164). Something that Stella cannot do is get caught with her fake identity. Yes, Stella can pass for white, but she is still black and if the neighborhood finds out that she's black, they'll treat her like they did her father in her nightmares.

While describing Jude's new job, Reese feels uneasy about it and her response is, "It's just a little side job, she said lightly. We could use the money. It's not and you know it. Well, what am I supposed to do? Just go on and pretending she ain't Stella's Daughter? I can't do that. I have to know her. I have to meet Stella."(Bennett 264). Jude goes as far as lying to Reese so she can get a chance to meet her auntie. Stella's effect on Jude is so powerful to the point that she remembered and dreamed of her for years.
