- To examine how quickly people would conform to new roles, Zimbardo put up a poster asking for volunteers for his research, mentioning that they would be getting paid for their participation
- Healthy male volunteers were randomly allocated the roles of either guard or prisoner. The 'prisoners' were taken from their homes without warning, then blindfolded and taken to the 'prison'
- The guards wore formal uniforms and dark sunglasses that hid their faces and were told to give the 'prisoners' demanding tasks (scrubbing dirty toilets, cleaning the floors etc). which were aimed to dehumanise them
- Stanford prison experiment CANCELLED
- The guards conformed to their roles quickly and verbally harassed the 'prisoners' who rebelled against them, meaning that the guards had to use violence against the rebellion.
- After only 6 days, the experiment was stopped due to the brutality of harassment put on the 'prisoners' and the ethical issues. Many participants suffered from serious mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety.
- Key findings: both guards and prisoners adapted to their roles quickly, which shows that social roles can influence behaviour. Well-balanced men became unpleasantly brutal and aggressive in the role of the guard.The Stanford prison experiment proved that people will act in a specific way because of the environment they are put in, not because of their personalities.
