They set up a colony in modern day Virginia. They name the colony Jamestown. This colony was right next to the Chesapeake river. The colonist set up a council. John smith is one of the members. The company starts reading the instructions from England of what they should do. This is a whole new environment for Sam,James, and Nathaniel.

The colonists had encounter with the Native Americans, some colonist went out to search for gold, but they found the Natives instead .This lead to a skirmish with the The native American tribe, the Powhatan.'s They killed some colonist in the skirmish. One of the colonists was James. John Smith eventually befriended the Powhatan chief and daughter, Pocahontas.

A long Peace happens between the Powhatan and the Jamestown colonists because of John Smith's negotiations with the natives. Both sides trade goods Like fur,food beans and weapons. Smith teaches Samuel how to speak the Algonquian Language and how to use the sword. Samuel also becomes good friends with the Native American's. He even hunts with them.

A long a tough winter comes to Jamestown. Food runs low, men get ill and die. Sam and most of the colonist blamed the food shortages on President Wingfeild and other councilmen for keeping the food for themselves. The Powhatan Chief had to stop trading food to keep his people hungry. Luckily, the colony survives the brutal winter.
