  • Well, it wasn't always that way because of natural selection.
  • Natural selection is the mechanism that most likely to result in adaptive changes in our gene pool.
  • What is natural selection?
  • Why are there more brown butterflies than white butterflies?
  • A long time ago, all of the butterflies were white. Unfortunately, the common predator in the area eats every butterfly in sight.
  • Oh no!
  • The predators were the big green birds wandering in the forest.
  • Woah! But what does color have to do with anything?
  •
  • Farasha the baby butterfly, asked Flutatura the parent butterfly as to why there are more brown butterflies than white butterflies. Flutatura explains that it wasn't always that way.
  • Ahhhh! Hurry! Let's get out of here!
  • Flutatura takes Farasha on an exploration of natural selection in their environment while telling her story of why and how more butterflies are evolving to be brown rather than white.
  • Phew! That was close!
  • ???
  • The baby brown butterfly was the closest one to the bird but it chose to eat the white butterfly beside it. At first, they thought it was pure luck. But as time goes by, they noticed that only the butterflies visible to the birds are being eaten.
  • Flutatura the parent butterfly continues to tell the story of the white butterflies and their predator, but Farasha is confused as to why the color of the butterfly matters to the birds.
  • The brown pigment gene gave the brown butterflies a reproductive advantage.
  • Reproductive advantage is a mechanism of evolution that works by altering the heritable traits of a population that can help them survive. For instance, our brown pigment.
  • What's a reproductive advantage, mom?
  • Flutatura tells Farasha her vivid story of the white butterflies being killed and eaten by the big green birds, Flutatura's parents were some of the only butterflies to survive.
  • The birds hunted down every butterfly they found.
  • Until one day, a life changing mutation/adaption occured. Two white butterflies had a brown baby butterfly. But that's not all...
  • White butterflies were still born, but as the single brown fish began to reproduce, more and more brown butterflies were born. The brown pigment was a heritable trait because it was passed down through generations. The brown pigmentation was beneficial because it blended well with the environment and served as a camouflage to keep brown butterflies from being eaten!
