- “Lyddie glared straight into the bear's eyes, daring him to step forward into the cabin. Then when the ladder was silent and she could hear the slight rustling above her as the family settled themselves on the straw mattresses, she backed up to the ladder and, never taking her eyes off the bear, inched her way up to the loft.” pg 2

- “Suddenly she saw Lyddie. She came over to the wall and whispered hoarsely across it to her. ‘What are you doing here?’ She was looking Lyddie up and down as she asked, as though Lyddie were a stray dog who had wandered too close to her house… Lyddie could feel the rage oozing up like sap on a March morning.”

- “‘No? Well, you’ll hear those names soon enough. Our crime has been to speak out for better working conditions.’”

- This is the scene where the bear breaks into Lyddie's cabin and she orders her family up to the loft. This is person vs. nature because it is Lyddie against the bear which is an element of nature.
- This scene is occurring outside the tavern where mistress Cutler first sees Lyddie. Mistress Cutler does not like the way Lyddie looks and is hesitant to have her work at the tavern.
- Diana is protesting against the sewing company with a group of girls, fighting for better wages and fewer hours.
