  • It's a pleasure to meet you Mr. Loewen, I'm Maria Santos.
  • Hmmm Santos, I don't know anyone with that name, she must not be from around here.
  • Yes! I actually worked for your competitor for 6 years.
  • So have you worked in this industry before?
  • Yes sir, I graduated with a degree in business.
  • I see here on your resume that you attended university?
  • Fingers crossed! I feel good about this one.
  • Maria Santos is not new to the area, but she certainly did not grow up here. She was born in Brazil and came as a baby. She has no accent but is a minority in this small town. She has experienced discrimination in the past because of the colour of her skin, and her uncommon name.
  • Thank you for coming in Ms. Santos, I'll give you a call and let you know our decision.
  • Hmm she's well qualified but I already know James and his Dad... and I've never hired a woman, I'm not sure a woman could handle this job.
  • Maria worked at a job for 6 years and after experiencing racism from a co-worker and her boss refusing to act on this, she left.Maria is confused about the questions being asked as Mr. Loewen has her resume on his desk but it seems he has not read it.
  • Again?! I thought the interview went so well!
  • Thank you for your interest Maria, we have decided to hire someone else.
  • Maria is well-educated, carries herself professionally and is a very hard worker. She doesn't know a lot of people in business circles as her parents' friends were mostly other immigrants. Her parents and their friends worked in the local factory, and some worked as janitors for the big business. Maria lacks social capital for this reason.
  • Glad they didn't ask about college, then I'd have to tell them I flunked out!
  • WelcomeJames Penner!
  • We're excited to have you join us here and feel that you will be a great fit! Your Father always speaks so highly of your work ethic.
  • Maria feels hopeful about her interview, but Mr. Loewen has already made his decision. Maria has cultural capital, but unfortunately in small towns, it's about WHO you know. Maria is also the victim of sex discrimination, old school ways are difficult to change.
  • Maria is disappointed, but also aware at the barriers affecting her in this small, close-minded town. Eventually she will realize the franchise companies rely on head office for hiring, and therefore, do not look at your social capital at all when making a decision.
  • James Penner is awarded the job at the big business. He has little experience, working for his Dad as a labourer. Mr. Loewen hired his Dad to do some flooring in his stately home last year, and they became golfing buddies. James also recognizes some of the employees as they all attend the same church. Social capital has won James a job that perhaps he isn't ideal for.
