- It was the first Monday of spring break, Angie and friends had planned a practice soccer match for everyone to practice their skills. 30 minutes into playing, Angie noticed she felt winded more than usual and couldn't fully breathe. This turned into complete tightness in her chest. Her friend Tiffany quickly called Angies mom to get her some help.
- Once Angies mom came to get her, they went to Angies primary care doctor where Dr. Little performed a respiratory evaluation called the pulmonary function test using a tool called spirometry. He explained that the spirometry tube is used to measure how much air Angie is able to breathe in and out her lungs but used to rule out other CRDS. Dr. Little also listened to her chest with a stethoscope and noticed a murmur sound in the right upper and lower lobes of Angies lungs. He referred the right side of her lung quadrants as the RUL and the RLL. Before the visit was over, He gave Angie's mom a referral to go see his brother whose a pulmonologist ( a respiratory specialist).
- The next day, Angie and her mom went to see the other Dr. Little who's a pulmonologist. He reviewed Angie's work up from the day before and previous labs. He shared that Angie has Cystic Fibrosis Bronchiectasis overall known as COPD generally. He stated that COPD specifically Bronchiectasis is permanent dilation and obstruction of the airway wall that she likely developed by age 2 and persisted as she got older. Hence, it affecting her now.
- A few days later, Angie and her mom went to see the other Dr.Little. During the visit he went over her work up done by her primary care physician and revealed that she had genetically triggered chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He explained that she likely could have been diagnosed at the age of two but the symptoms never presented itself until now.
- Dr. Little went on to further explain the treatments that Angie could do to help with her disease. He suggested that Angie be put on two inhalers like albuterol (proair HFA) and fluticasone (flovent HFA) for short and long lasting relief as needed. Dr.Little also placed an order for Angie to get a bilevel positive airway pressure breathing device (BiPAP) for when she sleeps. This machine would help improve breathing and decrease retention of carbon dioxide (hypercapnia) in her lungs.
- Six weeks later after Angie started treatment, she began to feel better and learned how to manager her respiratory disease effectively.
