- In The Perks Of Being a Wallflower, Chbosky is consistent with the theme of living in the moment. He pushes the idea you should always strive to put yourself out there, and that you shouldn’t let your uncertainty chain you to simply watching as life flies by.
- In the beginning of Perks, Chbosky portrays Charlie as this antisocial, robotic, deeply troubled young teen. Charlie starts off as not only an oddball, but a total outcast, a black sheep even within his own family. Despite this, Charlie goes through life seemingly indifferent to being ostracized, completely detached from life going on around him. Although this characteristic mainly affects Charlie himself, his apathetic nature had gotten people hurt in the past. One example of this would be was when Charlie talks about witnessing the rape of a girl at a party.
