A very Thankful Thanksgiving

- During the week leading up to Thanksgiving, Ms.M planned out so many activities for the kids. They were going to make hand turkeys and write out things they were thankful for in their life. All the kids were so excited to have a few days off of school, except Molly.
- What are you thankful for?
- Molly loved school. Even though she did not have many friends, she knew she would be warm and safe with a meal there. Not all of the kids understood Molly, she always felt isolated. Molly and her mom stay in a shelter so they can stay warm. This is why the other kids look at her differently.
- Her mom works very hard to try to make enough money for them to one day get a house, but it has been hard for them. Ever since Molly’s dad passed away, the two of them have been struggling. They try to be there foreach other, but they are both going through a lot between dealing with the loss and keeping up with life.
- When Molly’s mom comes to pick her up, Molly asks,“Mom, what am I going to do while you’re at work and I don’t have school?” She replies, “I think Ms. Meg is going to watch you, the worker at the shelter. Do you remember her? She is always so sweet to us. She is the one who has been helping me look for a place to stay. We have been working hard together.”
- “Ok, I like Ms. Meg,” Molly answers. Her mom replies, “Sweetie, she is very nice. You know it has been hard for me without your dad. She has been very helpful the last few months and I don’t want to leave you alone at the shelter. We can talk about it more tomorrow, now let's get ready for bed.”
- At night, it is very dark and scary while Molly tries to get to sleep. She holds the necklace her dad got her as a baby and tries to fall asleep. The next morning, her mom wakes her up for her last day of school before break. They go to the bathroom to clean up and then head to drop Molly off at school. The walk is very long to school, Molly’s old house was much closer and nicer than the shelter.
