  • Oh my gosh! Thank goodness no one saw me!
  • I'm... I'm nobody.
  • Princess? You shouldn't call me that.
  • What are you doing in here? Who are you?
  • Will you tell me who you are, princess?
  • One conversation later...
  • "I knew why I came here tonight, and Hawke was right, yet again. It wasn't to talk. I came here to live. To experience. To choose. To be anyone other than who I was. None of those things included talking."
  • This is Hawke.
  • Why are you here? I highly doubt it was to have a conversation.
  • "Panicked, I quickly backed into the room in front of me, closing the door behind me. Heart pounding, I looked around" (Armentrout 38).
  • I shouldn't be here. What if I was found unworthy? But, I've had fun tonight. I've felt alive. I've realized that I'm more than just the Maiden.
  • Please remove your mask.
  • "'You are most definitely not who I thought you were,' he murmured... 'Will you tell me who you are Princess?'... 'You shouldn't call me that.' 'Then what should I call you?' 'Then what should I call you? A name, perhaps?' 'I'm... I'm no one.' 'No one? What a strange name. Do girls with a name like that often make a habit of wearing other people's clothing?" (Armentrout 47-8).
  • This is a unique weapon and it's not cheap. Why do you have this, Princess?
  • You have to be stupid to come to a place like this without a form of defense. Why do you want to know who I am?
  • "I doubt the need for conversation led you to this room. You didn't come here to talk about sad things you can't change" (Armentrout 54).
  • Who says I don't know how to use this?
  • You're not wrong... But I do know how to use this.
  • Well, it's not everyday you come across a female who's been trained in Solis.
  • "I was the Maiden. The Chosen. My earlier conversations about what the gods concerned themselves with weakened. Would they find me unworthy? Panic didn't seize me like it should. Instead, a spark of hope did, and that unsettled me more than anything. The tiny glimmer of hope felt traitorous and wholly concerning, given that being deemed unworthy resulted in one of the most serious consequences. If I were to be unworthy, I'd face certain death. I'd be exiled from the kingdom" (Armentrout 54).
  • "His gaze shifted from the dagger to me. 'This is a unique weapon.' 'I know.' 'The kind that's not inexpensive,' he continued. 'Why are you in possession of this, Princess?' 'It was a gift.' Which was true. 'And I'm not foolish enough to come to a place like this unarmed.' He stared at me for a moment and then focused on the dagger again. 'Carrying a weapon and having no idea how to use it doesn't make one wise" (Armentrout 59).
  • Well, it's more dangerous to wield a weapon you don't know how to use. Well, Princess, you've caught my eye.
  • "What makes you think I don't know how to use it? Because I'm a female?' 'You can't be surprised that I would be shocked. Learning how to use a dagger isn't exactly common for females in Solis.' 'You're right.' And he was. It wasn't socially appropriate for females to know how to wield a weapon or be able to defend themselves... But I do know how to use it.' The right side of his lips curved up. 'Now, I'm truly intrigued" (Armentrout 60).
  • Now, I'm very intrigued.
