- A Mayor is an important official in the king's household. When the Frankish kings grew weak, the mayor took over lots of the king's duties. Charles Martel was one of the most powerful mayors and wanted to reunite all the Frankish nobles under his rule.
- Martel had strength in battle. He led the Franks into the battle of Tours in 732. Which was one of the most important battles in European history. They defeated an army of Arabs and Berbers.
- Pepin started a new dynasty when his father, Charles Martel, dies. He removed the king. He was the first to be anointed by holy oil by the Pope. Then Pepin helped the pope when he was threatened by Lombards. He led an army into Italy and defeated them.
