When they learned that she was with the Patupaiarehe of Waitakere, their rage only grew. In order to deal with the Waitakere Patupaiarehe and retake Wairere, a war party was assembled and headed out across the plain.

The tohunga flung deadly spells at the opposition. But this awakened and angered the two atua (gods) Mataaho, keeper of the earth's secrets and his brother Ruaumoko, god of volanoes and earthquakes. The two shook the ground and swallowed the people up.

Hui said, "No, and we are the only ones left."Although Wairere and Hui have long since departed into the afterlife, their foolishness is still evident in the Tamaki volcanoes.
