Not being able to contain his curiosity, Jem drags Scout and Dill into attempting to give Boo a note. The plan backfires when they almost get caught by Nate.
From then on, we consider everything we found in the knot-hole our property.
Jem, afraid for his relationship with Atticus, goes back for his pants he left when he ran away from the Radley house. His action confuses Scout.

After a week of bring moody, Jem confesses to Scout that the reason of his odd behavior was because of the condition he found his pants in.

The fact that everything on the Radley place was poison...Slipped Jem's memory.
The knot-hole in the tree in front of the Radley's begins to contain items in it.
Jem and Scout realize that they are the intended recipient when they find two bars of soap carved as replicas of them.
Another item is a pack of gum, which is graciously devoured by Jem. This leaves a puzzled Scout, for she does not understand Jem's change of heart.
