- Charlie Gordon is 37 years old and has a mental disability that affects the way he learns, making his IQ only 68. However, he's eager to learn new things and strives to be smart.
- Climax
- I am sorry, however, thatmy own contribution to the field must rest upon the ashes of the work oftwo men I regard so highly.
- Charlie has been struggling to retain knowledge and become smarter his entire life, and when a scientist named Dr. Strauss offers him an operation that will significantly increase his IQ he immediately accepts the offer.
- Falling action
- Hello Ms. Kinnian I'm ready for my lesson today.
- Charles...
- Charlie takes tests like being timed to solve a maze, in which he races a mouse named Algernon who's had the same operation as him and is incredibly smart. Charlie feels a special connection to the mouse after his operation, and he starts to care for it.
- Resolution
- I'll miss you forever Algernon.
- Charlie is now super smart from is operation, and is much smarter than the average person. He has begun to notice things around him, and has come to the conclusion that Dr. Strauss's experiment did not work as planned, since Algernon is regressing mentally. He writes a letter to Dr. Strauss saying he won't contribute to the experiment anymore and doesn't return to the lab.

- Charlie's intelligence has begun to regress, as he's becoming more emotional and is starting to forget things. He accepts that it's happening and ends things with his lover, Ms. Kinnian. He forgets that he hasn't been going to his class and goes there without realizing that everyone would notice his IQ had gone back down.
- Algernon dies and Charlie decides he wants to stay at a home far from where he currently lives, and writes in his last progress report that he wants someone to keep putting flowers on Algernon's grave.
