- Beatrice is very worried about taking the Aptitude test, unlike her brother, Caleb, who tries to comfort her.
- The two pass a group known as the factionless. A group of poor people, in this world of split factions, yet together, for their separate characteristics.
- After taking her test, Beatrice's tests came out inconclusive, which let her fit in multiple factions, giving her the title of "Divergent". Her faction would be up to her.
- To many's surprise, including her own parents, Beatrice chose to join the Dauntless, the warriors, and protectors of the factions.
- After her first two weeks of training, passing the test to truly become a Dauntless, by facing her greatest fears, by the skin of her teeth, she was sent with an army to the town of the abnagation, her old faction, where they were sent to thin out all abnagation due to a riot. This included her parents, who she found alone, and managed to hide from the army, with the help of Tobias, her new friend.
- Outraged with the order, of the unjust slaughter of the faction people, she seeked the leaders of the system of factions, to do something about it, in the center of the city. But she, and her friend, and partner, Tobias, were now rogue, and targets.
