"RULES OF THE GAME" BY AMY TAN

SETTING
"We lived in a warm clean two bedroom flat that sat above a small Chinese Bakery".
CONFLICT
I wish she would stop doing that.
This my daughter Waverly.
Rules of the game is a chess prodigy with Waverly battling her chess opponents and her mother.
CHARACTERS
It is hard for me to practice with you looking at me mom.
The setting of the story takes place in San Francisco's Chinatown
THEME
" Sometimes you need to lose pieces to get ahead."
Waverly's mom is bragging to everyone about her success in playing chess, and Waverly doesn't like that.
IMAGERY
"Father down the street was Ping Yuen Fish Market. The front window displayed a tank crowded with doomed fish and turtles struggling to gain foot on the slimy green-tiled sides."
Waverly Jong is the protagonist and her mother Lindo Jong is the antagonist.
The main message of the story is her mother pressuring her to play chess and Waverly starts to question if she wants to plat chess anymore.
"Next time win more lose less".
