  • This is Sam! Sam is starting Kindergarten tomorrow.
  • Sam’s parents decided she would be in a Dual Language Program at school. Which meant she had to start learning Spanish in half of her day. Sam was scared because she had never spoken Spanish before.
  • Okay Sam, it's your first day of school! Half of your day is going to be in Spanish!
  • When Sam walked into her classroom, she got really nervous. Her teacher, Mr. Marcos, started to speak in Spanish. Sam began to panic out of confusion.
  • Sam started to pick up the new language, but it was really hard. Her teacher didn’t talk in English very much, so Sam was often confused in class.
  • Eventually, Sam made friends in her class. Her older brother Charlie also knows Spanish, so Sam isn’t alone.
  • Now, Sam is starting Elementary school. Sam didn’t want to keep doing half of her day in Spanish, but her parents insisted that it would all be for a good reason.
  • Sam meets a girl in her class. Her name is Abby! Abby is also in Dual Language.
  • Sam and Abby help each other in class, because they are both learning a new language.
  • Sam started to feel left out from her other friends at school. She thinks that the other classes get to do more fun things at school than she does.
  • At home, Sam is confused about her homework. She complains to her mom about Spanish class.
  • Mom, it doesn't make any sense to me! I don't want to do Spanish classes anymore!
  • Sam’s mom tells her that it’s okay to struggle, but you shouldn’t give up because you’re learning something new.
  • Sam made it through Elementary School. She’s nervous to start Middle School because it’s a new school, and a lot more students than she was used to.
  • Again, Sam wanted to stop learning Spanish. She wanted to “fit in” with the other kids who weren’t in Spanish classes.
  • Sam’s classes are getting a lot harder than she was used to. Instead of just learning a new language, she’s learning things like History, Science, and Language Arts all in Spanish.
  • Sam’s favorite parts of the day were her classes in English. She still felt like the other classes were doing activities at school that were more fun.
  • Sam’s science teacher, Mr. Medinilla, notices that Sam was often confused in class, and not enjoying what she was doing. He tries to help her by talking to her after class.
  • Sam, you look stressed in my class. I want you to know that you're doing really well, and it's okay to ask questions!
  • After talking to Mr. Medinilla, Sam decides to start looking at the positives of learning Spanish, instead of only the negatives.
  • Sam starts to realize that being able to learn Spanish was a really lucky thing. Not everyone gets the opportunity to learn a new language in school.
  • You've made it this far, and now we're letting you choose if you want to stay in Spanish or not.
  • Sam completed Middle School, and was moving on to High School. This time, her parents give her the choice of if she wants to keep taking Spanish classes.
  • Actually, I think I'm going to keep learning in Spanish!
  • Sam never thought that she would keep taking Spanish when she had the choice. But, her mind had changed.
  • Sam starts to enjoy her Spanish class, and now it’s her favorite class of the day.
  • Sam now sees why it’s such a good thing that her parents put her in Dual Language. She is grateful that they made her stick it out even when it was hard.
  • Sam learns that it’s okay to be confused in class, and have a hard time. Her teachers help her to learn that it’s okay to ask questions.
  • At the end of High School, Sam decided to take a big test that approved her as bilingual. Bilingual means that you know two languages equally.
  • I really hope I do well...
  • On the day of the test, Sam was really nervous. She studied as much as she could.
  • Sam waited a long time for her results of the test, but when she got them, it wasn’t the news she was hoping for.
  • I didn't pass!!
  • Sam felt very embarrassed of her results. She felt sad because her confidence was put down. But, she had one more chance on the test, so she took it again.
  • Sam waited even longer for her results this time. When she got them, she was shocked…
  • I'm bilingual!
  • She passed!! Sam was thrilled with excitement. All of her hard work had paid off!
  • In the end, Sam was glad that she stayed in Spanish. Even when things got hard, she stuck it out. Sam is proud of herself.
