  • Mrs. Mallard heard the news from her sister and her husband's friend that her husband, Brently, passed away in a railroad disaster.
  • Louise, open the door! I beg, open the door-you will make yourself ill. For heaven's sake, open the door!
  • Go away. I am not making myself ill.
  • Mrs. Mallard fell into a deep state of depression, she saw the nice weather from her window and all the birds chirping, and yet she was feeling so down.
  • She began to realize that a feeling was coming towards her, and she whispered under her breath, "free, free, free!" She knew she would weep again when she saw her dead husband's face; but she looked beyond that moment and thought of all the years to come that would belong to her absolutely.
  • Her sister begged her from outside the door, asking her to open the door, or else she's going to drive herself sick. Ms. Mallard insisted that she was not sick. She imagined how nice things would be if her husband doesn't exist.
  • She opened the door due to her sister's pleadings, and Richards also stood there, waiting for her at the door. Someone opened the door with a latchkey; it was Brently Mallard who entered. He had been far from the scene of the accident, and didn't even know there had been one. He stood amazed at Josephine's piercing cry; at Richard's quick motion to screen him from the view of his wife.
  • Richards was too late; Louise already saw Brently and died. When the doctors came they said she died of heart disease-of the joy that kills.
