  • Ulysses S. Grant planned to seize control of the Mississippi River by capturing Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in Tennessee in February 1862.
  • General Grant then pushed into Shiloh, a small town in Tennessee in February 1862. He was urged to pull out and surrender, but he did not. This stubbornness allowed the Union to capture more of the Mississippi River and an important railroad.
  • On July 21, 1861, the Union set out to capture control of more of the South. However, General Thomas Jackson stood "like a stone wall", blocking the Union army from continuing further, granting him the nickname Stonewall Jackson.
  • In 1863, Grant laid siege on VIcksburg. The Union had tried and failed many times to capture it, but on July 4, 1863, the Confederacy surrendered and VIcksburg was now under the control of the Union.
  • On June 30, 1863, the Union met the Confederacy at Gettysburg to stop them from taking Washington D.C. They both fought as hard as they could for 3 days without stopping. Despite his previous failures, General Lee attacked with Pickett's Charge. It was risky. The plan failed, and the Battle of Gettysburg was won by the Union on July 3, 1863.
