- Young Goodman Brown is going to go to the forest. His wife, Faith asks him to stay at home but he finally decides to go. - Brown walks into the forest and meets a mid-aged man with a serpent-liked staff in his hand. They talks a lot and gets into the forest.Symbols:Serpent-like staff : sneaky, evil and temptation
- Brown walks and sees a woman who is really pious and exemplary and used to teach him catechism. He is confused about why she is here.Symbols:witch-like cloth: devil, hell, dark
- Brown decides to give up and come back home while the conversation between the riders and pink ribbons in the woods make him keep on.Symbols:The forest: The forest is the background of most of the story and it represents evil, depressed and mystery.
- Brown is mad and went to the ceremony. He sees faith and that woman.He realizes the evil of the ceremony and tells faith to resist the devil.Symbols:Ceremony: evil, death, regret, hell
- Brown wakes up and finds that it is just his dream. He goes out and sees people in his dream but he is afraid of them now. He doesn't believe anyone until he dies.Symbols:Dream: degenerate, reverse, change. In this story, it represents brown's loss of innocence.
