- A period of economic growth is called an expansion. When the establishment first opened, an expansion probably took place, with sales and products coming in equally.

- The highest point of growth is called a peak. A contraction, which is a period of slowing down, usually follows a peak. The owner's customers could have become less interested in the products and stopped buying them.

- A particularly bad contraction is called a recession. When she started going out of business, the business dropped into a trough. With the owner's sales going down, her business couldn't pay for the expenses it had.

- With no one to buy the products, the business sank even further into a depression, which is when economic conditions get really bad, which is what forced the owner to shut down her business. But on the bright side, if the business cycle continues, she could have found a new location to start again.
