- In chapter 1 of the novel, Bud is an orphan that was in line to get breakfast. Then one of the caseworkers taped down the line and got Bud and Jerry. The caseworker told them that they are going to a temporary home. Bud sees that Jerry is crying of scaredness, so Bud goes and comforts him.
- Bud was sleeping, while all of a sudden he felt something going up his nose. When he wakes up he sees Tood with a pencil in his hand. Tood tells him that he shoved the pencil inside of his nose. Bud get furious and starts fighting with Tood. Tood's mom comes in and saw Tood (fake) chocking. Tood starts saying lies, blaming it all on Bud, that now he has to go to the shed.
- Bud is inside the shed, he is really scared of what is in the shed. Bud remembers what happened to his best friend. His best friend was sleeping on the floor one night when all of a sudden a roach is in his ear. Bud thinks he sees a bat, but really it was a hornet nest. So he hits the nest and all the hornets went and stung him. With all his might he busts out the window.
