- Ashoka became emperor around 265 BCE to rule the Mauryan empire
- His grandfather is the founder of the Mauryan empire.
- Ashoka set out to expand his empire by force He conquered the last of India’s independent kingdoms and other lands to the west and expanded the kingdom to cover most of the Indian subcontinent.
- The Mauryans won, and hundreds of thousands of Kalingans were massacred.
- Ashoka was very moved by the devastation he had caused he saw burned houses and scattered cops all around and the wails of the mourners pierced his years.
- After the battle Ashoka adopted Buddism because he saw a monk meditating and the bloody battle changed him.
- Ashoka’s empire experienced peace and prosperity under his rule. Ashoka proclaimed the sacredness of all human life and set an example through his charitable acts toward the poor in efforts to relieve their suffering. He even urged respect toward animal life by banning the unnecessary slaughter of animals
- Ashoka died around 238 BCE, the Mauryan Empire crumbled. However, his conversion to Buddhism was an important event.
- Even though Buddhism is not the major religion of modern-day India, Ashoka's legacy helped the religion spread to other regions and countries. Without him, it is possible that Buddhism would not be as widely practiced as it is today.
